Intense Carbine – 2018 – Legacy

With 155mm of rear-wheel travel, 160mm up front and slack, aggressive geometry, the Intense Carbine 29er is the ultimate monster truck enduro trail bike.

Brand new for 2018 and available now for demo-rental and purchase at Park City Bike Demos, the Intense Carbine 29er is a big, badass enduro bruiser designed to smash Strava times and win races. If you’ve got a thing for big wheels and big bikes, the new Intense Carbine 29er was made for you. Evolved from the previous 140mm-travel Carbine, the new model has 155mm of rear-wheel travel, 160mm up front and a re-tuned suspension engineered for high speeds and big hits. The increased travel, updated geometry, plusher suspension and big wheels make for a potent mix that will have you looking for bigger, steeper and nastier lines to conquer. They look pretty sexy, too.

Intense Carbine 29er Carbon Fiber Frame

Intense has two tiers of carbon bike frames. The Pro Build Carbines we have in our demo-rental fleet have the top-tier, “SL” carbon frame. Constructed from High Modulus carbon with a carbon upper link and ti hardware, the SL frames is stronger, stiffer and about 250 grams lighter than the standard carbon frame.

Attention to detail on the frame is excellent. The most obvious example is the beautiful cast-metal head tube badge. Not so obvious is the internal cable management, which has molded-in, foam-wrapped tubes, which make cable installation super easy and help keep the cables from rattling around inside the frame.

The 2018 Carbine has all-new enduro geometry, too. It’s longer, slacker and has a lower top tube for better standover. Intense increased the wheelbase for stability and stretched the reach to put the rider in a more aggressive position for improved control. In spite of the overall increase in length and travel, the chainstays have been shortened 6mm compared to the old Carbine and the bottom bracket height has only changed by one millimeter. The head angle is a slack, gravity-loving 65.5˚ and the seat tube angle is a comfortable and pedal-friendly 74˚.

Intense Carbine 29er JS Tuned Suspension

The “JS” in JS Tuned stands for Jeff Steber, the founder and head designer at Intense. JS Tuned is a variation on the multi-link VPP suspension system Intense used to license from Santa Cruz. Since the VPP patent expired, Intense has done a lot of work to rebrand, refine and optimize their suspension for different types of riding. They currently have three different platforms, JS Trail, JS Enduro and JS Downhill.

The Carbine 29er and Tracer 27.5 both use the new JS Enduro platform, which has longer links to open up the system for a plusher, more linear feel. The pedal platform is compromised a bit but since the Carbine is intended to be an enduro race bike with an emphasis on downhill performance, giving up some pedal efficiency is a perfectly reasonable compromise. Enduro racers, bike park riders and big mountain adventurers will appreciate the Carbine suspension’s ability to smooth out chunder and handle big hits with ease. And when it’s time to climb, the big wheels and RockShox Super Deluxe pedal switch will keep you pedaling comfortably and efficiently.

Intense Carbine 29er – The Bottom Line

A couple of years ago it seemed like the bike industry decided 29ers were only for XC riders. We never thought that was the case, though and we’re really excited to be able to the Intense Carbine with our customers. If you’re a fan of 29ers and want a really capable, point-and-shoot bike for enduro racing or bike park ripping, you’re not going to find anything more qualified and fun than the Intense Carbine.

Intense Carbine 29er – Where it Fits

There aren’t a lot of long-travel 29ers but we do have another comparable big-wheel enduro bike in our fleet, the BMC Trailfox. If you’re interest has been piqued but you aren’t sure if 29-inch wheels are right for you, check out the Carbine’s smaller-wheeled sibling, the Intense Tracer 27.5.
