2016 Felt Z4 Disc

Felt Z4 Disc Carbon Road Bike

Engineered for both comfort and performance, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a disc-equipped carbon road bike as well-spec’d and affordable as the Felt Z4 Disc. It’s a perfect road bike for beginners, privateer racers, weekend warriors and anyone else looking for a lot of bike for their money.

Felt makes some of best carbon fiber available and the Z4 frame is constructed from Felt’s own UHC Performance carbon fiber. It’s strong, stiff and light: our 54cm photo bike weighed just 18 pounds 9 ounces (8.6kg), without pedals – very light for such an affordable bike. Engineered for efficient power transfer, the Z4 has some built-in flex and natural carbon damping to help minimize fatigue during long days in the saddle. A carbon seatpost adds even more vibration dampening; and the UHC Advanced carbon monocoque fork keeps the bike tracking straight and true.

The Z4 frame is made from the same mold as Felt’s more expensive Z2, with the same relaxed “endurance” geometry. The slack head angle, a taller head tube and longer wheelbase make the Felt Z4 Disc a very stable, easy to ride bike with a comfortable, upright position that will keep you on the road all day.

Why disc brakes? The main reason to upgrade to a bike with disc brakes is safety. It’s not so much about stopping power as it is about brake modulation and predictable performance. The Z4 Disc’s SRAM Rival 22 hydraulic disc brakes allow you to apply more nuanced braking without locking up the brakes and losing control. Disc brakes behave exactly the same, regardless of conditions. Rain, snow, mud or what have you – the Felt Z4 disc brakes will always provide the same predictable power and performance.

The Felt Z4 Disc is spec’d with a SRAM Rival 22 mechanical drivetrain equipped with a compact 50/34 crankset – perfect for novice cyclists as well as climbing Park City’s big mountain passes. Cable routing on the carbon fiber frame is all internal, giving the bike a sleek look – and keeping your cables clean. And if you ever want to upgrade, the Z4 internal cable routing is compatible with Shimano Di2 as well as SRAM’s new wireless eTap electronic shifting systems.

Whether you’re going big in the mountains or knocking out some pre-work training miles, the Z4 Disc delivers, and does it without breaking the bank.

Carbon Frame: Felt is widely-regarded as one of the finest carbon fiber frame makers in the bike industry. While the Z4 doesn’t get their top-shelf TeXtreme Ultimate carbon, Felt says the UHC Performance carbon fiber they use in entry-level race bikes like the Z4 Disc is comparable to the carbon used by many manufacturers for their pro-level race bikes. The Z4 Disc frame is made in the same mold as the higher-end and much pricier Z2 and the ride has been described as “racy,” “confidence-inspiring,” “well-rounded” and balanced.
Disc Brakes: Just a few years ago, disc brakes on road bikes were unheard of. However, the UCI has approved disc brakes for the Tour de France in 2016 and we’re seeing them spec’d on more and more bikes. The main benefits of disc brakes are better modulation control and more predictable performance. They’re especially valuable in wet conditions, they allow later braking and they reduce fatigue on long descents. The Felt Z4 Disc has SRAM Rival 22 hydraulic disc brakes with a 160mm rotor in front and a 140mm rotor in the rear.
Endurance Geometry: The word “endurance” can be confusing to some people when applied to road bikes. The design strategy is slacker, longer and more compliant – in other words: comfortable. In order to keep racers pedaling day after day in the Grand Tours, and help regular Joes hang in their club ride peloton, the Z4 Disc endurance frame is designed for all-day comfort. It has a taller headtube for a more upright riding position, engineered flex to smooth out the ride and a longer wheelbase for stability. Whether you’re an aspiring racer or weekend warrior on a budget, the Felt Z4 Disc will keep you comfortable and get you to the finish line.
SRAM Rival Drivetrain: The best way to describe the SRAM Rival grupo is, entry-level high-end. It’s the most affordable good stuff SRAM makes and it has that precise, snappy shifting they’re so well known for. With a 50/34T compact aluminum crankset and 11-32T cassette, the Z4 Disc is geared for climbing – perfect for the beautiful mountain roads we have here in Park City.
