The Felt Compulsion 30 might be the best enduro bike you’ve never heard of. After extensive time on the Compulsion, we’re excited to offer it for rent or purchase in 2016. With 27.5-inch wheels, 160mm of front and rear travel, Felt’s excellent Equilink suspension system and a rock-crushing 66° head tube angle, the Compulsion is an all-day, all-mountain trail dominator. It’s our bike of choice for Wasatch Crest, lift-served days on Deer Valley’s Tidal Wave flow trail and Park City’s rowdier, more technical trails.

The Compulsion pedals and climbs really, really well thanks to the Felt’s Equilink suspension and the light, stiff aluminum frame. It’s very stable with no perceptible bobbing and excellent traction on loose surfaces. And when you point it downhill, the Compulsion’s 160mm of RockShox suspension conquers trail obstacles with confidence and precision.

Felt did an outstanding job engineering and refining the Compulsion frame. While aluminum may not have the sex appeal of carbon, it’s reliable, affordable and when used right it makes lightweight, bombproof bike frames. The Compulsion frame is lighter than many other aluminum frames and the complete bike weighs just a tad over 29 pounds. The medium-sized 27.5-inch wheels split the difference between 26-inch and 29-inch so it rolls smoothly over rocks and roots but remains quick and flickable in the corners. The rear suspension utilizes an Equilink strut between the top and bottom of the rear triangle for controlled pedal input and plush travel on big hits. Suspension damping is controlled by the class-leading RockShox Pike RCT3 fork and Monarch Plus RC3 rear shock.

With its durable aluminum frame and carefully chosen components, the Compulsion 30 may be the best-bang-for-your-buck enduro bike on the market. A killer bike with 160mm of stout RockShox suspension, 1x11 drivetrain and a dropper post for just $3500? That’s a no-brainer if you ask us.

Wheel Size: 27.5 (also called 650b)
Long-Travel Performance: Although it’s earned high praise from journalists who’ve had the opportunity to ride it, the Felt Compulsion remains relatively unknown. That’s exactly the kind of challenge we like – we’ve ridden it, we love it and it’s our mission to help you discover great new bikes and cycling technology. Don’t let the aluminum frame fool you, the Compulsion is a great climber and a stable, confident descender. Everyone who rides it is impressed and we’re excited to make it available in 2016 for mountain bikers who want a longer, slacker bike for riding the Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort bike parks.
Equilink Suspension: Developed for mid-range and long-travel all-mountain bikes, Felt’s Equilink suspension combines great pedal performance with small bump sensitivity for maximum comfort, control and traction. It has a very precise feel and is an excellent climber for such a long-travel bike. With a 160mm RockShox Pike RCT3 fork in the front and a 160mm Monarch Plus RC3 shock in the rear, the Compulsion is ready for almost any rock garden, drop, jump or washed-out logging trail.
Lightweight Aluminum Frame: Carbon fiber is the cool rich kids’ clique. Aluminum frames are the Ford F150 of bike frames – a solid, reliable workhorse platform for great mountain bikes. And you know what happens in the movies – the cool kid crumbles under pressure and the scrappy kid from the wrong side of the tracks comes out on top. Don’t underestimate aluminum – when it’s used right it’s really light, stiff and pretty much indestructible. And if you’re honest, it’s pretty sexy, too.
