Devinci Troy Carbon
One of our favorite bikes at Outerbike in 2015, as well as one of the most popular bikes in our rental fleet, the Devinci Troy Carbon is a 27.5 carbon all-mountain trail bike with 140mm rear-wheel travel and 150mm up front. Thanks to its patented Split Pivot suspension, it climbs and descends equally well, making it an excellent choice for Park City’s varied singletrack trails. Devinci’s gravity racing history is apparent as soon as you throw a leg over the Troy. Although it pedals quite well, it really comes alive on the descents. In fact, it handles chunky downhills so well you’ll think you’re on a longer-travel bike.
Our pick from the 2017 Devinci Troy lineup is the Carbon GX. The carbon frame (there’s also a more affordable aluminum frame Troy) is light, stiff and efficient and the GX kit offers a great balance of performance, price and weight. And let’s be honest – carbon is a lot more sexy than aluminum. The rear triangle is a hybrid construction with aluminum chain stays, carbon seat stays and clearance for 2.35-inch tires. Internal routing protects the cables and contributes to the Troy’s smooth, clean lines. New for 2017 – the Troy now has front and rear Boost hub spacing for stiffer, more reliable wheels and improved tracking and precision on technical terrain.
The Troy features design, which does all the stuff you want a good linkage to do: controls pedal bob, minimizes bottom-out and helps keep Dave Weagle’s patented Split Pivot suspensionthe wheel on the ground for maximum traction. The really notable thing about the Split-Pivot system is how it isolates the brakes from the suspension. The result is a comfortable climber that truly feels like a magic carpet when you’re charging through the chunder – even when you’re hard on the brakes.
To complement the Split-Pivot suspension, Devinci spec’d the Troy with a custom-tuned RockShox Monarch RT3 Debonair rear shock, and a 150mm RockShox Pike RC Solo Air fork up front – pretty much the current industry standard for high-performance trail bike suspension.
Geometry is tuned for technical trail riding with an emphasis on quick handling. The head angle is standard issue (for a 27.5 bike) 67 degrees for comfortable climbing and stable descending on all but the steepest trails. What sets the Troy apart from other trail bikes is a low bottom bracket and short chain stays. Those two things keep the center of gravity low, making the bike feel very stable and a ripper in the corners. The short chain stays make the bike a snappy handler on tight, technical singletrack. It’s a great bike for long Park City trail rides where you encounter everything from groomed berms to old-school rock gardens.
Note: Bike shown above is the 2016 RS model.
