Devinci Spartan Carbon

Designed to win Enduro World Series (EWS) races, the 2018 Devinci Spartan Carbon is an all-mountain enduro race bike that’s also well-suited to the bike park and big mountain terrain. If you’re in search of a long-travel (165mm rear/170mm front) quiver-killer that can tame the nastiest downhills and climb back up for seconds, the 2018 Spartan Carbon is exactly the bike you’re looking for.

Launched late in the 2017 EWS race season, the 2018 Devinci Spartan Carbon is lighter, slacker, faster and already taking wins in major enduro races. In fact, Devinci enduro pro Damien Oton took the final EWS win in 2017 on the 2018 Spartan. The previous Devinci Spartan enduro bike was so popular we were sold out for most of the 2017 season and we’re really excited for the updated version.

The 2018 Devinci Spartan Carbon is a whole lot more than a fresh coat of paint. Building on the original Spartan formula of slack, adjustable geometry and Split Pivot suspension, Devinci redesigned and updated nearly every part of the bike to make the 2018 Spartan Carbon even faster and more fun – uphill and down. Like the previous model, the 2018 Spartan has 165mm of rear wheel travel. However, front travel has been increased from 160mm to 170mm to make the bike even more slack and sendy. The new carbon frame is stiffer, lighter and climbs more efficiently – especially with the addition of the SRAM Eagle 12-speed drivetrain (standard on PCBD Spartan demo bikes).

Whether you’re looking for an enduro podium spot or you want a big-mountain/park bike that can climb, the 2018 Devinci Spartan Carbon was built to dominate.

Devinci Spartan Carbon Split Pivot Suspension

Designed by bike industry suspension guru Dave Weagle, the patented Split Pivot linkage provides a solid platform for pedaling and climbing. However, it shows its true colors on steep, steppy descents. The core of Devinci’s patented Split Pivot suspension system is the rear pivot. Located in-line with the rear axle, it separates suspension and braking forces so you can brake whenever and however you want and the suspension will keep right on working. Combined with really deep, progressive bump absorption and you’ve got a bike that will have you looking for steeper, gnarlier lines to send.

To learn more about the Split Pivot suspension, let Dave Weagle explain it himself in this video from Devinci.

Devinci Spartan Carbon Frame

Devinci made a lot of changes to the 2018 Spartan Carbon frame. In fact, if you put the new Spartan next to the old one, it looks like a completely different bike. The frame is constructed from Devinci’s mountain bike-specific DMC-G carbon, a multi-directional layup that uses advanced EPS molding for outstanding stiffness, strength and reliability. That’s not just marketing talk, either. Devinci carbon mountain bikes may not be the lightest on the market but you can ride them like an idiot knowing they won’t fail.

For 2018, the Spartan Carbon frame loses some weight and gets even stiffer thanks to a redesigned rear end. There’s a new vertical shock mount and the chain stays have been updated from aluminum to carbon. Between the new carbon chain stays and other frame refinements, the frame has been lightened by more than two-thirds of a pound (310g).

The Spartan geometry has also been thoroughly updated. The 2018 Spartan Carbon frame is longer and slacker with increased reach, which makes it more stable on steep, technical terrain. Tire clearance has been increased to accommodate 2.6-inch tires and a Di2 battery/stash compartment was added to the downtube.

Devinci Spartan Carbon – The Bottom Line

The new Devinci Spartan Carbon design checks all the enduro/big-mountain boxes: it’s a more aggressive descender as well as lighter and a better pedaler. Strong riders in search of the ultimate all-mountain bike, enduro racers and park riders will all be blown away by the uphill and downhill performance of the new Spartan Carbon. If pinning it on techy descents is your game, the Spartan Carbon will not disappoint.

Devinci Spartan Carbon – Where it Fits

With 165mm of rear travel and 170mm in the front, the Spartan Carbon straddles the enduro and super-enduro bike categories. In our lineup, that puts it between the 170mm rear/180mm front Knolly Delirium super-enduro bike and our two other 27.5 enduro bikes, the 165mm rear/160mm front Intense Tracer and the 155mm rear/160mm front Knolly Warden Carbon.
