Devinci Django Carbon 29
One of the most capable and fun 29er trail bikes we’ve had the pleasure of riding, the Devinci Django Carbon 29 is one of those bikes where the numbers just don’t add up. With only 120m of travel in the rear and a 130mm fork, you’d think the Django Carbon 29 would feel like a cross-country bike. You’d be wrong, though. It’s so much more than it looks like on paper and we’re really excited to offer it in our 2017 mountain bike fleet. The big wheels, slack geometry and excellent Split-Pivot suspension system beg you to point your front wheel right at rock gardens and let go of the brakes.
The Devinci Django Carbon 29’s slack, adjustable geometry is very different from most short and medium-travel 29ers. Despite having “just” 120mm of travel, the Django 29’s big wheels, Split-Pivot suspension and slack 28° head angle (in the Lo position) make it feel more like a long-travel bike in rocky, rooty terrain. But unlike long-travel bikes, when it’s time to climb, the Django 29’s minimal travel and efficient suspension keep it moving forward with no bobbing, wallowing or wasted energy. The Django 29 gives you the confidence and efficiency you need to take on those really big all-day, all-mountain rides. If you prefer more traditional geometry, it’s easy to make the bike half a degree steeper and a little higher by rotating the eccentric pivot bolt in the upper link of the rear suspension.
Our pick for best price-to-weight-to-performance ratio is the Devinci Django Carbon 29 with the Shimano SLX/XT kit. It has premium Fox suspension components and a 1×11 drivetrain with a mix of Shimano XT and SLX bits for efficient shifting, a smooth ride and great value.
Devinci Django Carbon 29 Carbon Fiber Frame
No matter what spec Django Carbon 29er you choose, Devinci uses the same excellent carbon frame design and construction. They combine an EPS-molded T600 carbon front triangle with a one-piece 6061 rear triangle for a light, stiff, tough frame that makes the bike relatively affordable compared to a lot of other carbon bikes. The complete SLX/XT Django Carbon 29 build weighs in at just over 28.5 pounds (without pedals). That’s not the lightest in this class but we’ve found Devinci’s carbon bikes more than make up for that little bit of extra weight with their high fun factor and sturdy reliability. Add a pair of our Reynolds Cycling Carbon Trail wheels and the weight drops to about 28 pounds and you have an even stiffer, more reliable and better performing bike.
Devinci Django Carbon 29 Split-Pivot Suspension
The Django Carbon 29 uses Dave Weagle’s patented Split-Pivot suspension for super-efficient pedaling and plush, bottomless travel on the descents. Split-Pivot is a linked single-pivot system with the rear pivot placed in-line with the axle. Chain tension effectively locks out the suspension when you’re pedaling so all your energy keeps you moving forward and the bike feels like it’s glued to the ground. When it’s time to head back down the trail, the in-line rear pivot separates braking forces from suspension so you can brake as hard as you want without locking out the suspension. The result is a smoother, more confidence-inspiring ride on the downhill – especially on chunky, technical terrain. Devinci’s Split-Pivot full-suspension mountain bikes are some of the most bottomless-feeling we’ve experienced and the Django 29 begs you choose the toughest lines, point it and let ‘er rip.
To learn more about Split-Pivot suspension, let Dave Weagle explain it himself in this video from Devinci.
Devinci Django Carbon 29 – The Bottom Line
We’ve had a couple of solid rides on the Devinci Django Carbon 29 (Interbike Outdoor Demo and Moab Outerbike) and we’re excited to offer it for sale and in our demo/rental fleet. The low, slack geometry and Split-Pivot suspension set it apart and make it more versatile and a lot more fun descending than any other short-travel 29er we’ve ridden. We expect it will be one of our most popular bikes for everything from beginner rides to all-day Park City singletrack epics.
Devinci Django Carbon 29 – Where it Fits
We’re always on the lookout for unique, bikes that standout from the pack. The Devinci Django Carbon 29er is definitely one of those bikes. With just 120mm of rear travel it appears to fit in at the bottom of our lineup. But thanks to aggressive geometry and the bottomless Split-Pivot suspension it actually falls in the middle of our 29er lineup, between the 130mm BMC Speedfox and the 150mm rear-travel BMC Trailfox enduro race bike.
