BMC Roadmachine 02
BMC started from scratch when they created their new ultimate do-it-all road bike of the future, the disc-specific BMC Roadmachine 02. The refined endurance-oriented design is comfortable, efficient and capable of performing at the highest levels no matter what kind of road surface (or lack thereof) or weather conditions you encounter. Designed to help BMC’s elite racers survive the infamously rough cobbles of Paris-Roubaix, the BMC Roadmachine 02 is both forgiving and fast, so you can lay down the power and stay in the game on long, punishing rides; or stay comfortable on your regular weekend club ride.
The BMC Roadmachine 02 is available in three specs: an affordable entry-level option with Shimano 105 drivetrain; a mid-range model with Shimano Ultegra mechanical drivetrain; or the top-of-the-line model spec’d with Shimano’s Ultegra Di2 electronic drivetrain. All three versions have the same carbon frame with clearance for 30mm tires and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for maximum power and reliability in wet or dry conditions. And even if you purchase the surprisingly affordable Shimano 105 spec, the bike is fully upgradeable to a top-of-the-line electronic drivetrain thanks to BMC’s DTi (Dual Transmission Integration) design, which has customizable internal cable routing for any drivetrain configuration.
If you’re looking for a reasonably-priced, high-performance endurance bike with a Continental pedigree and room to grow, look no further. The BMC Roadmachine 02 is the ride you’ve been dreaming of.
BMC Roadmachine 02 Carbon Fiber Frame
The Roadmachine 02’s Swiss roots are apparent in the frame’s clean lines, DTi (Dual Transmission Integration) cable management and subtle aero elements like the tucked in rear wheel and hidden, integrated seatpost clamp. Those details are just the icing on the carbon fiber cake, though. Look a little deeper and you’ll see the new Roadmachine blurs the lines between traditional endurance bikes, race bikes and even aero bikes.
With a new, refined TCC design (Tuned Compliance Concept) and geometry that splits the difference between endurance and race bikes, the BMC Roadmachine 02’s sleek carbon frame and fork are tuned to balance stiffness with vertical compliance so you can ride all day without wasting any energy. High-modulus carbon fiber and larger diameter tubing are used for the down tube, bottom bracket and head tube to ensure the bike is laterally stiff and efficient. Offset dropouts, carbon fork tips, thin seat stays and a redesigned D-shaped seatpost provide just enough vertical frame flex to keep you comfortable on long rides and rough surfaces. Factor in clearance for wider wheels and tires and the Roadmachine is, in BMC’s words, “The One-bike Collection.”
Geometry is relaxed for stability and confidence on descents. But if you look closely at the numbers you’ll see BMC’s engineers were careful to also preserve some of the precise, responsive handling of a race bike. Check the head angle of the Roadmachine and you’ll find it’s actually steeper than that of the Teammachine, BMC’s Grand Tour race bike.
A step down from the top-of-the-line 01 frame’s premium carbon, the 02 carbon frame still weighs in at a very respectable 1100 grams (the 01 frame weighs just 960 grams). It also conserves cash you can invest in post-ride tacos, beers, chocolate bunnies or a set of performance-enhancing Reynolds Cycling carbon wheels.
BMC Roadmachine 02 – The Bottom Line
A true one bike quiver-killer, the BMC Roadmachine 02 is ready for anything. Whether you’re trying to hang with the peloton or spinning out a casual Sunday backroads tour, the BMC Roadmachine 02 will keep you moving quickly and comfortably over potholes, weathered mountain roads or European cobbles. If it’s value you’re looking for, the sexy “Super Red” Shimano 105-spec Roadmachine 02 pictured above is a hell of a deal at just $2999.
BMC Roadmachine 02 – Where it Fits
The BMC Roadmachine 02 is a new concept that combines some of the best qualities of both dedicated race bikes and traditional endurance road bikes. In the Park City Bike Demos road bike lineup it fits between BMC’s Teammachine SLR race bike, the Argon 18 Krypton endurance bike and the Argon 18 Krypton XRoad adventure bike.
