Argon 18 Krypton XRoad
If you’re the kind of rider who wants to keep going when the pavement ends, then the Argon 18 Krypton XRoad adventure bike was made for you.
A variation on Argon 18’s Krypton endurance bike (which is based on the Gallium Pro Tour-level race bike), the XRoad is a high-performance, carbon road bike designed to handle dirt and gravel as well as pavement. With clearance for tires up to 32mm wide, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, low relaxed geometry and a carbon frame tuned for rough pavement and gravel roads, the XRoad is perfect when you’re heading off the main roads, looking for adventure.
Known for road bikes with exceptional fit, geometry and speed, Argon 18 has been designing competitive Tour-level race bikes for 25 years. If you watched the Tour de France or the Tour of California in 2016, you saw Argon 18 bikes in action. In fact, Jelly Belly Cycling team member Lachlan Morton just won the Tour of Utah on an Argon 18 bike.
Although the Krypton XRoad isn’t a traditional race bike, it shares many of the same design elements that make Argon 18’s other bikes such great competitors. At the core of all Argon designs is their Optimal Balance philosophy, which balances weight, stiffness and comfort for bikes that are fast, efficient and easy to ride. In order to tune their bikes for speed and comfort, Argon uses a concept they call the Horizontal Dual System (HDS). The design splits the bike horizontally using large-diameter tubing on the bottom for stiffness, and smaller more compliant tubing on top to dampen vibrations and absorb bumps. All Argon bikes also offer three head tube heights via their Press-Fit 3D System. In contrast to traditional headset spacers, the 3D System actually increases the stiffness of the bike as you raise your handlebar height. It also offers a more precise fit and better body positioning, increasing the comfort factor.
To build a worthy gravel grinder / adventure road bike, Argon 18 used the same design principles that have worked so well in their other bikes – the Horizontal Dual System, Press-Fit 3D System and size-specific geometry. With the Krypton endurance road bike as starting point, they stretched the wheelbase, lowered the bottom bracket, slackened the head angle and raised the head tube a bit to make the bike stable at speed, yet nimble when you need it to be. They also created new carbon tubing with better dampening abilities for a smooth ride, regardless of how rough the road is. The result is a bike with the sharp handling you expect from Argon 18, that’s stable on questionable surfaces and comfortable when the going gets rough.
The Argon 18 Krypton XRoad will take you further. When you hit that gate at the end of the road, go around it and keep on truckin’.
