Argon 18 Gallium Pro
All sleek black carbon with simple black, white and red graphics, the Argon 18 Gallium Pro is a dead serious race bike that proved itself in the trenches at the Tour de France. Engineered for Gran Tour domination, the Gallium Pro is one of the lightest and most versatile bikes in the peloton. It’s also one of the most innovative and exciting road bikes in the Park City Bike Demos rental fleet. In 2016, it was the bike of preference of team Bora-Argon. In 2017, Argon 18 and this bike will power team Team Astana for a recently-announced partnership for 3 years.
The most important thing about this bike: you don’t have to suffer for top shelf performance. Argon 18 designs their bikes around a philosophy they call Optimal Balance: a “subtle alchemy of lightness, rigidity, comfort and aerodynamics.” Thanks to the Optimal Balance ideal, they’re known for bikes that combine world-class performance and surprising comfort. Items such as thin chainstays but a wickedly-stiff lower portion are all part of the design.
The Gallium Pro bikes in our fleet are fitted with Shimano’s Ultegra Di2 electronic drivetrain. In our opinion, that’s the sweet spot for performance and price. You get race-developed, Tour-worthy shifting precision and reliability without having to take out a second mortgage on your house.
One of the key tenets of the Optimal Balance concept is great fit. Size-specific geometry, a reversible carbon seatpost and the aluminum Press-Fit 3D System (an aluminum cup that attached into the frame to increase or decrease your headtube length), allows you to customize your head tube height, make Argon 18 bikes among the most versatile and best fitting on the market. This is one of the most innovative aspects of Argon 18s – you can truly set the bike how you want. The Gallium Pro may be designed for racing, but swap out the short 3D head tube insert for the 25mm setup (each bike comes with 3 head tube height setups) and you’ve got a more upright, comfortable endurance bike. There’s no performance compromise, either – the Press-Fit 3D System actually increases the stiffness and steering accuracy of the Gallium Pro as the head tube gets longer.
Great fit isn’t the only thing that distinguishes the Gallium Pro from the rest of the pack. Argon 18’s Horizontal Dual System (HDS) splits the bike on a diagonal axis, so they can tune the top and bottom, separately. The HM7050 Nanotech carbon frame uses large diameter tubing on the bottom for stiffness, and thinner, more compliant tubing on top to dampen vibrations and smooth out bumps in the road. As a result, the Gallium Pro is super-efficient, with great power transfer – but still comfortable and easy to ride. Gallium Pro owners agree it’s one of the most comfortable bikes on the road.
What does all this mean to you? It means you can have both Gran Tour performance and comfort – they are not mutually exclusive, which is extremely rare in tour-caliber race bikes. A better fitting bike is a more comfortable bike and when you’re comfortable, you can ride longer and faster. Between the excellent fit, adjustable geometry and stiff, efficient Horizontal Dual System frame design, the Argon 18 Gallium Pro is a tour-level race bike that anyone can comfortably ride. You really can have it all.
