Thin Air Festival Park City Bike Ride

Last week we hosted a road tour of Park City for the second annual Thin Air Festival, a leadership and entrepreneurial conference held here in Park City. The “Thin Air 2017 Road Jam” was a friendly, no-drop ride put on by the Thin Air Festival, Strava, Park City Bike Demos and the X-Men Cycling Club of Park City. Scroll down to see all the ride photos in our Thin Air Festival bike ride photo gallery.

The goal of the 2017 Thin Air bike tour was to encourage conference attendees and local cyclists to get to know each other, get some exercise and see more of Park City than they would sitting in conferences all day. About 25 to 30 people showed up at the Park City Bike Demos shop on Friday morning for coffee, bagels and donuts. We had our road bike fleet all tuned up and ready to go and 5 or so riders took advantage of the half-off rental special we offered to Thin Air Festival ride participants.

Along with local riders and regular festival attendees, the Chief Product Officer of Strava and Thin Air Festival speaker Aaron Forth also joined the Thin Air Festival bike ride. We set him up on the brand new BMC Roadmachine, a disc-equipped carbon endurance bike and one of the most exciting road bikes in our demo-rental fleet. Representatives from Assos and Rotor show up to ride, as well. Assos even brought samples of their coveted chamois cream so no one could complain about having a chapped ass.

The original plan was a 21-mile counter-clockwise ride around Park City that included two small climbs and one substantial ascent near by the Olympic Center. But due to an incoming winter storm, and to accommodate less experienced riders, the route was shortened to about 18 miles with a couple of mellower climbs.

The real purpose of the ride was social, anyway. No one was out to set any PR’s or take any KOM’s. It was all about fun, meeting new people and getting some fresh air and exercise. Most important of all, a new tradition was instituted. We expect to host this ride every spring from now on. Consider this your notice for the 2018 Thin Air Festival spring group ride – you can put it on your calendar, now.
