BMC Trailfox 02
Enduro racers, backcountry adventure riders and 29er lovers looking for an aggressive long-travel bike for big terrain –the BMC Trailfox 02 29er is the bike you’ve been dreaming of.
The BMC Trailfox is a rare and special creature – a long-travel 29er enduro race bike. With 150mm of rear wheel travel, a 160mm RockShox Pike up front and a light, stiff carbon front triangle, BMC aptly calls the Trailfox, “the Swiss army knife with the longer blade.” Big wheels, lots of travel, new-school geometry and BMC’s APS dual-pivot suspension (more on BMC’s APS suspension, below) make the Trailfox the monster truck of enduro bikes. Just point it, let go of the brakes and Hulk Smash anything that gets in your way.
Serious riders only, please: BMC designed the Trailfox for enduro racing and it’s chalked up three top ten finishes in the first two Enduro World Series races of 2016. The Trailfox was designed to be ridden fast. When you’re on the gas, it comes alive and eats up trail like nothing you’ve ever experienced. Don’t assume that means it’s sluggish or unwieldy in the corners, though. The Trailfox has excellent new-school geometry and it’s surprisingly nimble in tight singletrack.
At $5999, the Trailfox 02 really hits the mark in terms of performance and value. The carbon fiber front triangle is light and stiff while the durable, aluminum rear triangle helps keep the price within reach of people on normal budgets. The Rockshox and Cane Creek suspension dampers are top-notch and the SRAM X01 1x11 drivetrain is one of our favorites offering top-shelf performance and all-mountain versatility at a reasonable price.
BMC Trailfox 02 Carbon Fiber Frame
The Trailfox 02 29er frame has a front triangle constructed with BMC’s 01 Premium Carbon and a rear triangle made of triple-butted aluminum. The result is a bike that feels and behaves like the all-carbon Trailfox 01, but sets you back $1500 less. That’s $1500 you can invest in road trips, burritos and post-ride beers.
The Trailfox geometry is low and slack (67° head angle with 30mm bb drop) so you can attack steep root sections, rock gardens and drops with confidence. Cable routing for shifting, brakes and dropper post is internal and the rear triangle comes equipped with a rubber chainstay protector. The frame even includes an integrated chain guide – proof the Trailfox was designed for enduro racing and fast, rowdy descents.
BMC Trailfox 02 APS Suspension
The 150mm APS (Advanced Pivot System) suspension is designed to provide maximum traction and acceleration while cornering and pedaling; then soak up everything you throw at it on the downhill. Similar to other dual link suspension systems, BMC’s APS linkage uses chain tension to provide a solid platform for pedaling, making it an excellent climber – especially on technical ascents where traction is critical. The dual link also effectively separates braking forces from wheel movement so you can brake hard without upsetting the bike (if you’ve ever experienced the horrors of “brake jack”, you know this is huge). And when it’s time to head home, the combination of big wheel rollover, floating link suspension, Cane Creek’s excellent Inline shock and the stout 160mm RockShox Pike fork make the Trailfox a downhill missile.

BMC Trailfox 02 – The Bottom Line
Aggressive riders who like long-travel bikes that pedal well will love the Trailfox. It’s equally at home at the bike park, in big mountain terrain and between the tape on an enduro race course. If you’re on a 29er and want more, you owe it to yourself to take a closer look at the BMC Trailfox.
BMC Trailfox 02 – Where it Fits
At Park City Bike Demos, we’re all about bikes that offer the rider something different and special. A long-travel, 29er enduro race bike, the Trailfox definitely fits that bill. The Trailfox is also the bike that got us interested in BMC mountain bikes. Because it’s so unique, it’s tough to say exactly where it fits into our lineup. It’s really in a class of its own. But if we have to shoehorn it in, it falls somewhere between its smaller sibling, the BMC Speedfox, a 130mm 29er trail bike, the Devinci Django 29, an aggressive 120mm rear / 130mm front-travel 29er trail bike, and our other dedicated enduro race bike, the 160mm, 27.5 Devinci Spartan.
