BMC Speedfox 02
Truly trail-worthy 29ers are a rare breed. Sure, the 29-inch wheel rolls over nearly everything. But a truly capable 29er trail bike needs plenty of travel and geometry that gives you confidence when the trail gets steep and rough. The BMC Speedfox 02 does just that. BMC made an early commitment to 29ers with their “Big Wheel Concept” design and the Speedfox is a nimble, Alpen-bred, carbon fiber 29er with 130mm of efficient front and rear travel, backed by true trail geometry. If your dream bike is a 29er that can pedal all day, rip berms and flow through rock gardens, the BMC Speedfox 02 is a must-try mountain bike.
The BMC Speedfox 02 sits in the middle of the Speedfox lineup and we think it hits the sweet spot for most people in terms of performance and budget. It has a carbon front triangle, a stiff one-piece aluminum rear triangle and it comes spec’d with a 130mm Fox 34 Performance fork, Fox Float DPS EVOL rear shock, a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post and a dual-ring Shimano drivetrain (available in either 2x11 XT or 2x10 SLX/XT).
Geometry is a critical part of bike design and BMC did a great job with the Speedfox. A slack 68.5° head tube angle (for a 29er) combined with a relatively low bottom bracket and short chainstays make the Speedfox a stable but quick handler and give the pilot confidence in corners, rocks and steep descents. Match that geometry with 130mm of front and rear travel, BMC’s APS suspension and big 29-inch wheels and you’ve got a sure-fire recipe for all-mountain fun.
BMC Speedfox 02 Carbon Fiber Frame
Stiff and light with clean, understated Swiss lines, the BMC Speedfox 02 frame combines a carbon fiber front triangle with an aluminum alloy rear triangle for performance that fits the working person’s budget. The front triangle is constructed from BMC’s premium 01 carbon just like the top-of-the-line Speedfox 01 bike; and the rear triangle is constructed from premium, triple-butted aluminum alloy for a stiff, bombproof rear end that also helps keep the price down. The Swiss are known for their thoughtful design and attention to detail and a couple of details that shouldn’t be missed are the Speedfox 02’s integrated chain guide and all internal cable routing. They help keep the bike running smoothly and contribute to its smooth good looks.
BMC Speedfox 02 APS Suspension
BMC’s APS (Advanced Pivot System) suspension was designed to optimize traction, control and efficiency. It’s intended to “soak up the bumps not pedaling power” and we think it’s one of the best pedaling bikes we’ve ridden. Technically, APS is a dual-link system with one link just above the bottom bracket and another between the top of the chain stays and the shock. The mad scientists in BMC’s Swiss mountain lair have optimized the pivot placement, leverage ratio, axle path and shock stroke to maximize pedal efficiency, traction and bump compliance. The result is no wasted energy when you pedal and maximum traction when you’re climbing and cornering. And descending is as simple as picking your line and letting the suspension soak up anything that gets in your way.

BMC Speedfox 02 – The Bottom Line
The Speedfox 02 combines big wheel rollover and traction with an efficient suspension system and fun trail geometry for an excellent all-round trail bike. Pedal up from the bottom, tear it up on the ridges and peaks and then bomb down through the bike park – the Speedfox 02 delivers maximum grins on nearly every kind of trail.
BMC Speedfox 02 – Where it Fits
Bridging the gap between cross-country and trail bikes, the BMC Speedfox 02 is a smaller, lighter sibling to the 150mm rear / 160mm front travel BMC Trailfox 29er enduro race bike, and a more conservative and pedal-friendly trail bike than the Devinci Django 29 trail 29er.
